Telling Our Stories; Black History (Feb. 9, 2012)

 "Sojourner Truth"
Credit: womenhistory.about.com

In honor of Black History Month and to commemorate the unending women who braved their lives, their freedom, and their souls I thought it best to allow the music today to remind us of what Black History is....A journey....A journey that we are constantly on, the destination is not reached for as we live and breathe each day we ourselves make Black History.

Just to give you a taste here is the immortal and amazing Abbey Lincoln doing Freedom Day with Max Roach in 1964.

The Intentioned Show - Andrea, Diva of the Day

In honor of the upcoming King holiday I thought it would be a good idea to think about what action verb stands behind liberation.  For me, that word is "Intentioned" it's a strong, honest, action oriented word that I hope today's show brought to your in many ways.

In the parlor today we had with us Nila Kay a wonderfully talented and humble singer, songwriter, musician, and Mom ( I found out on air).  The music that you heard today hopefully took you on a personal journey that led you to question, seek, explore, and know your own ideas surrounding being "Intentioned".

Nila Kay can be seen below

Choose Life...right NOW!

Recent events in my life have made me understand & value this life that I live everyday. I am hoping to share with you, through music this afternoon, what it means to choose LIFE. No matter our daily circumstances, everyday is a new lease on that life that we purposely live. I ask you to take this musical journey with me today and evaluate, expand and ultimately appreciate the life you have, the life you lead today and the life you will choose for yourself tomorrow.

As always comments (on the blog), calls to the studio (202-588-0839), or tweets are always appreciated (@sophiesparlor 0r @dreaofwaters). I would love to hear from you all this afternoon, I really hope this show heals you, me, and all of us today!

The playlist will be posted this evening and don't forget to listen in online at http://www.wpfwfm.org/

The Cover Up - Sep. 8, 2011

This show will explore the land of musical versions, covers and remakes. These covers will be done by a host of women in different languages and with different instruments. We also will be interviewing 19 year old musical phenom Grace Kelly Be sure to listen in today and see what covers you know about and the ones you don't know.
